What Happens After You Reach Out?
Reaching out can be daunting, especially if you don’t know what’s going to happen next. When you reach out, here are the next steps:
Telephone consult
After you reach out, I’ll respond either via email or text to schedule a free, no-obligation telephone consultation. I’ll call you at our scheduled time, and I’ll ask you to tell me just a little bit about what’s bringing you to therapy and what you’re hoping to get out of your therapy experience. During that call, I’ll explain a bit about my practice as well as give you the opportunity to ask any questions that you have about what it’s like working with me, or any questions about therapy in general.
If you’re feeling a bit anxious about this call— don’t worry! It’s my job as the therapist to lead this call, so you don’t have to feel the pressure of knowing what to say, or anything like that. You may want to prepare some questions for me, like if you have specific needs, just so I can be sure to address those for you. But other than that, there is absolutely no expectation to prepare anything for the call.
And if you’re worried that you’ll be put on the spot to decide whether you want to continue working with me— I know how awkward and uncomfortable that is, so I’ll usually ask whether you’d want to book our first session, or if you want to think about it for a bit and I can follow up with you in a couple day’s time.
Our first session
If it feels like a good fit for us to work together, I’ll schedule a first session on the telehealth platform I use— Jane, which is PHIPA-compliant, meaning that it meets the legal and ethical standards for confidentiality in keeping your personal health information safe and secure.
You’ll get an email to create a Jane account and fill out some intake forms before our session. And throughout this process, you’ll be getting emails from me about each of the steps, so I can always answer any questions you have along the way.
When it’s time for our session, you’ll get an email with a link to the secure video conferencing platform. You simply click in, and… Voila! You’re in your first therapy session! In this first session, I'll get to know you a bit better and set some goals for our work together. We’ll also have time to see how this session felt for you, and see if we need to make adjustments going forward!
